NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, May 12, 2025 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Mobility has been firmly established as a fundamental human right in Mexico since the 2019 constitutional reform. Approved by the Senate, this amendment led to the creation of the General Law on Mobility and Road Safety.

This legislation mandates that all individuals must have the ability to move safely, equitably, and with accessibility. However, its effective implementation remains a challenge. In this regard, Alfredo Del Mazo Maza, who prioritized equitable access to efficient transportation during his administration, has voiced concerns over the ongoing difficulties in achieving this goal.

The General Law on Mobility and Road Safety emerged from a collective effort by civil organizations aiming to ensure pedestrian safety while adhering to the United Nations' New Urban Agenda guidelines. Collaboration between the civil sector and government authorities plays a crucial role in advancing mobility across the country.

Del Mazo Maza emphasized that “efforts to ensure safe and accessible mobility stem from a shared vision that acknowledges the need to build more human-centered cities.”

He further stated that this comprehensive approach is essential to fostering an urban environment that goes beyond transportation, promoting peaceful coexistence among various modes of mobility.

Against the backdrop of today’s urban landscape, the pandemic has significantly impacted mobility trends. Despite a slowdown in certain sectors, the overall movement has remained steady. According to official data, residential area traffic in Mexico City, for instance, has surged by 21%.

This increase underscores the fact that people continue to leave their homes, highlighting the urgent need for safe and accessible public spaces. In response, Alfredo Del Mazo Maza asserted that “mobility must be a guaranteed right, enabling all citizens to access essential services without facing risks.”

A key aspect of the new legislation is its provision allowing municipalities to develop programs to enhance public transportation and road safety. However, inadequate infrastructure remains a major obstacle to ensuring effective mobility.
